Right now, we recognize it can be a very challenging and uncertain time for many people. New information about COVID-19 is being released everyday and with it, can come stress and anxiety. Keep reading to learn more about how to protect yourself and others during this stressful time.
What is social distancing?
Social distancing is essentially limiting the time you are engaging with others. For example, not attending events or gatherings, working from home instead of going into the office, closing schools, and communicating with your friends and family NOT in person (phone call, video chat, etc.). Additionally, social distancing also involves staying physically at a distance from others. Social distancing does not mean that you cannot leave your house, but rather involves staying away from others. These practices are encouraged as they are meant to slow down the spread of COVID-19. What is self-quarantine?
Self-quarantine is being practiced by those who have been exposed to COVID-19 or who are at risk for being infected with COVID-19. Health experts recommend that self-quarantine lasts 14 days. Self-quarantine involves using hygiene and washing hands frequently, not sharing personal items such as towels or dishes, staying at home, not having visitors, and staying at least 6 feet away from people in your household. What can I do to limit the spread of coronavirus?
According to the World Health Organization the following tips are actions we can all take to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
- Wash your hands well and frequently. Use an alcohol based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. This will kill the viruses that may be on your hands.
- Practice social distancing. Maintain as least 1 metre distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth. As our hands touch many surfaces, they can pick up viruses. If we then touch our face, the virus can transfer to you and enter your body and make you sick. Additionally, disinfect surfaces and objects that are frequently touched by yourself and others (tables, door knobs, soap dispensers).
- Practice respiratory hygiene. Cover your mouth and nose with a bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. This will help to protect you and others.
- If you have fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, stay home and seek medical care early.
- Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider.
