Helping Plan Sponsors manage prescription drug costs with the Saskatchewan Special Support Program

As an advisor, you understand the growing importance of managing prescription drug costs within workplace benefits plans. Prescription drugs now account for an increasingly large portion of overall health care expenditures, with costs rising faster than any other component of a benefits plan. The key factors driving these costs are:

  • A rise in overall prescription drug usage
  • The introduction of newer, higher-cost medications

To help manage these expenses for your clients, it’s important to be aware of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health’s Special Support Program (SSP), which provides income-tested prescription drug assistance. This program helps individuals manage high prescription drug costs relative to their income, keeping benefits premiums more stable and helping to ensure comprehensive coverage for employees.

How the Special Support Program benefits Plan Sponsors

Once a member’s family prescription drug claims exceed a pre-determined threshold, Saskatchewan Blue Cross sends a letter to the member, encouraging them to apply to the Special Support Program. This program allows for deductible and co-payment relief, helping plan sponsors manage rising drug costs. The SSP application requests proof of income from the member, who can submit an Income Tax Return or Notice of Assessment.

Once the application is processed by the Program, the member will receive confirmation of their assistance level and will be asked to share this information with us. If Saskatchewan Blue Cross does not receive this information, drug claims may be temporarily suspended once utilization reached a predetermined maximum threshold.

While SSP participation is not mandated within workplace benefits plans, it provides a valuable opportunity for plan sponsors to help manage costs without compromising on coverage.
