Staying Active into the Fall

Our best ideas for keeping up your good habits even as the weather cools off.

Fall has officially arrived in Saskatchewan, and this year it brought some snow! The weather is cooler, we’re feeling cozier, and the idea of staying inside and watching a movie with the family sounds like a pretty good weekend activity. So how do you keep your kids (and yourself!) up and active while the weather starts to decline?

We’ve come up with a list of some of our favorite fall activities that you can do with your family to stay active as it gets cooler outside. So throw on a button-up plaid shirt (or maybe a jacket and some gloves) and get moving.

Visit a corn maze or a pumpkin patch

There’s lots of room to walk and play, and the puzzle aspect of the maze gives kids a brain workout too. Use Google to find a maze near you, or check out this article from To-Do in Canada for a list of locations in Saskatchewan.

Rake up all your leaves

We know, this doesn’t sound like the most exciting of ideas. But at the end of raking these into a pile, you (and the kids, of course) get to jump into it. And the best part is, when the snow comes to stay, you won’t roll up any of those old leaves into your snowmen.

Build a scarecrow

You’ve raked up the leaves and you’ve taken several running leaps into them. Now what? Use all those leaves to assemble a classic scarecrow. Swing by the local Value Village or Salvation Army for some old gloves and ask kids for help with filling them with your backyard leaves.

Get out for a fall walk

Take the opportunity to enjoy the crisp air and gorgeous colors before the leaves fall. Bundle up and go for a stroll around one of our beautiful Saskatchewan cities before we get snow that will stick around for the whole season.

Indoor dance party

On days when you just don’t feel like getting outside, put on some of your favorite music and have a dance party in the living room. You’ll be surprised how the movement gets your heart pumping.

Make a healthy snack

We’re sure you’ll work up an appetite with all that activity. When you’re ready to take a break, ask your kids for help whipping up a healthy snack. You can keep it simple with carrots and dip, or try this recipe from Cookie + Kate for apple muffins that are packed with healthier ingredients.
