9 Summer superfoods to add to your diet

With summer comes many in-season fruits and vegetables! Keep reading for a list of our favourite summer superfoods to add to your diet.

Superfoods are foods that are dense in nutrients, and therefore great for our health! Many foods that you most likely already eat on a regular basis are filled with tons of nutrients with added health benefits. Are there any foods from the list below you could add into your diet?

Red bell peppers

Red bell peppers are a great source for Vitamin C. They are known to be milder and sweeter than green bell peppers, while also providing 240 percent of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C. Add this tasty vegetable to your next salad for some colour and nutrients!

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are known as the heart, skin and brain protector. They are rich in Lycopene, an antioxidant known to protect against the sun’s rays, are known to slow arterial aging, as well as fight heart disease, stroke, memory loss and impotence. They are also easy enough to grow in the backyard, whether you have a pot or a whole garden. The redder the better with this one.

Watermelon

Not only is watermelon a refreshing treat, but it also has added benefits! Watermelon is made up of 92% water and only 6% sugar. This makes it a great hydrating food for those hot summer days. Blend frozen watermelon with ice for a tasty slush!

Beets

This vibrant vegetable is full of great nutrients. Beetroots are sources for fiber, folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C. Beetroots and beetroot juice have been associated with numerous health benefits, including improved blood flow, lower blood pressure, and increased exercise performance. Blueberries

Grapes

Grapes are another fruit filled with health benefits. They are are rich in antioxidants that may protect against chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Cherries are rich in antioxidants while also containing compounds that may protect the heart and prevent arthritis pain. Next time you are looking for cherries, choose the reddest you can find! Not only will they taste the best, but have the most nutrients as well.

Mint

Mint is a refreshing herb often used to ease gastrointestinal issues such as indigestion or stomach pain. Add a few sprigs to tea, water, or salads to add a refreshing taste.
