Northern Saskatchewan is an incredible place to visit. With vast boreal forests, freshwater lakes, and sand dunes, you will be left in awe of the province’s natural beauty. An area so large and remote can be hard to visit, so we have created a guide to help you explore! From a glam weekend to remote backcountry camping, how will you experience Saskatchewan’s North & Central regions?

Saskatchewan has four main ecozones, the prairies (featured in our recent blog) , the Boreal Plains, the Boreal Sheild, and the Taiga Sheild of the far North. Saskatchewan’s northern half comprises the latter three ecozones; it is a diverse and beautiful coniferous forest region filled with freshwater lakes, river systems, and glacial features. It is sparsely populated and remote, making it a coveted place to experience nature. From camping to fishing, beaching to birding, there are numerous destinations for all levels of outdoorsy and adventurous.
Prince Albert National Park
This park is only a 2-hour drive from Saskatoon, making it a great place to head for a day-hike or weekend camping trip. Prince Albert National Park is an extensive area featuring the beach town of Waskesiu, horseback riding, camping, and an extensive network of hiking and cross-country ski trails.
Lac La Ronge Provincial Park
One of the biggest parks in the province consists of nearly 100 lakes! Lac La Ronge Provincial Park has several campgrounds, canoe routes, swimming, sailing, hiking, and more! Located about 4 hours north of Saskatoon, this gorgeous natural area is the perfect place to spend a weekend.
Meadow Lake Provincial Park
Featuring the Boreal trail, one of the top destinations in Canada for avid hikers and enthusiastic novices alike, the Meadow Lake Provincial Park is one of our favourite parks in Northern Saskatchewan. If you love fishing, this provincial park features more than 20 lakes, rivers, and streams filled with 4 species ok Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye, Yellow Perch, and Whitefish.
Narrow Hills Provincial Park
Home of the gorgeous “Gem Lakes,” named for their jewel-toned water in the sunlight, this provincial park is a must-see for any adventurer. From wilderness tenting to RV-friendly sites, there is a place for every kind of adventurer. Experience Narrow Hills’ crystal clear water and arresting Boreal landscape carved by ancient glaciers this summer!
Visit the remote and rare Athabasca Sand Dunes.
Available by fly-in only, this is an exciting destination for any serious outdoors adventurer. Bordering Lake Athabasca, these anomalous dunes are as mysterious as they are incredible. This stunning wilderness area, accessed by float plane, is recommended for experienced outdoor enthusiasts only, as it is remote and has no available amenities. This fragile ecosystem contains rare species and landscapes with over 100km of dunes to discover. If you’re ready to take on the challenge, there is no fee to camp at the Athabasca Sand Dunes, but you must plan ahead!
Take a stop in Saskatoon –– the bridge city has a lot to offer!
Saskatoon is located in Meewasin River Valley along the South Saskatchewan River. Whether you are on your way North or looking for a fun and easy weekend getaway, Saskatoon is a must-stop destination.

Enjoy the amazing Meewasin River Valley.
The extensive Meewasin trail system begins within city limits and extends outward into the North East Swale, Chief Whitecap, Wanuskewin Heritage Park, the Cranberry Flats Conservation area, and more. With over 100km of trails, there is no shortage of areas to explore.
If you’re looking for another way to get active, try to bike the trails maintained by the Saskatoon Trail Alliance or take a Stand Up Paddleboard from Berry Barn to the Downtown boat launch!
Relax on the Prairie Lily Ferry.
The Prairie Lily ferry takes guests on a slow and enjoyable tour of the South Saskatchewan River. The friendly staff makes the tour a cute way to spend a few hours of your day. Rediscover the Meewasin River Valley from the water!
